In 1985, a little girl was born in Kenya to a Kenyan mother and South African father, the 2nd in a family of four girls. Perhaps her parents had a feeling of how their little bundle of joy would turn out, but I’m pretty sure they did not expect her to reach such great heights.
There is nothing ordinary about Tryfina and the first step on her journey to success was when, after studying for her BSC in Construction, she went on to obtain and Honours degree in Quantity Surveying at the University of Cape Town and registered as a professional Quantity Surveyor with SACQSP within 2 and a half years in 2010 as well as MRICS in 2012. She even makes a hard hat look glamourous.
But Glamour is not the name of the game when Tryfina is on site. With her usual aplomb, she stepped into the Construction industry in 2003 and since then has applied her depth of knowledge in the field of Construction and Property development not only in South Africa but also in Botwsana, Zambia, Dubai, Qatar, Beirut and Abu Dhabi.
In fact, her Tryfina’s most ambitious project was the Abu Dhabi international airport which was valued at 10.8 Billion Dirhams (R42 Billion Rands). As a Quantity Surveyor, her range of projects is mighty broad and includes Malls, Office Blocks, Residential and Mixed-Use Developments, 5 Star Hotels, Airports, Schools, Prisons and Water Pump Stations.
After working in the UAE for 5 years, Tryfina returned home to Johannesburg to make a difference in her own country and decided to start her own business Triumphant Zoe (Pty) Ltd in 2019. And triumphant she will is as she also holds a Masters degree in Business Administration obtained from University of Stellenbosch Business School. Tryfina is also a certified Life Coach, Business Coach and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner.
If you think that that’s were her sphere ends, think again. In 2018, she was nominated as the Women in Construction Rising Star. And earlier in 2019, she returned to her Alma Mater Cape Town University where, as key guest speaker, she delivered a scintillating and inspiring speech at the Top Achievers Award Ceremony for the Construction Economics and Management Department.
Her life is packed to the hilt, but she still has time to enjoy running, playing tennis, listening to worship music and evangelism.
Take the fina of the end of her name and you get Try. Here’s a girl who will keep on trying.
In 1993 a little girl was born in Pretoria South Africa by Tsonga parents, 2nd in a family of three boys. Portia strongly believes that her parents had great plans for her future hence they made sure that she went to the best schools for better education, her parents have been very supportive to be the person she has become.
Portia entered the Construction industry in 2018 and since then has applied her knowledge in the field of Construction and is open minded about her career and always willing to learn. In fact, her most aspiring project was the OR Tambo international airport in South Africa. As a Quantity Surveyor, her scale of projects includes Airport, Mining, Complex, offices, and Residential.
After working at NBI company for 1 year, Portia went back to the University of Witwatersrand to finish her Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying in the year 2019. In the year 2017 Portia noticed a need of giving back to her community by forming a project called Change A Life Project, which stretches a helping help to the needy.
Born free as a third generation South African in 1991 afforded me the luxury of grabbing every opportunity that my country has offered me. With this freedom I made it my duty to make use of the education and resources to the utmost and develop my skills and continue learning.
Schooling at the University of Witwatersrand was a growing experience and I knew that I had to make the best of every learning moment. It was at University where I had the most personal growth, where became confident and assertive.
My first notable job was in a PrQS Consultant firm and was a huge change from University. The job prepared me by forcing me into a male dominated environment, learning how to conduct myself in order to be taken seriously and professionally.
The construction industry is a vast, ever growing and dynamic industry that I am totally immersed in. As a quantity surveyor and project manager, I am constantly in a position where I am apart of the solution of developing and improving our communities through infrastructure.
I can now confidently say that I am a young, vibrant, eager and hardworking individual with capacity to continuously learn and grow in this industry. I am also currently studying towards a Master’s in Construction Project Management in my free time. I believe the course work that I’m learning is equipping me with knowledge, skills and competencies that I can further apply to all projects and within organisation as a whole.
