As part of our youth day celebrations we asked the youth at Triumphant Zoe Property to share what youth day means to them. This is what they had to say:

June 16 is a reflection of the massacre of school children during the Soweto Uprising in 1976. It acknowledges the sacrifices which they made for the bettering of our education; their protest brought the freedom that the students of today have. As a young person living in South Africa, youth day is a celebration of the ability of the South African youth to change the circumstances in which they find themselves-Melissa

Today’s youth of South Africa is not exempted from violence, poverty, inadequacy of educational opportunities and unemployment. What I’m most grateful for, being youth in South Africa today, is seeing the resilience in my peers, the ability to soar amidst the turmoil. We are a generation that mirrors our predecessors. The youth of June 16, 1976. We are a force to be reckoned with! -Nomfundo

Youth day symbolizes endless opportunities which were made possible by those who put their lives on the line to make sure the future of this country is in capable hands. Youth day reminds us that they are those whose lives were cut short for us to enjoy the free education we are experiencing now. Youth day reminds us that the future of this country belongs to the youth and it's within us to take responsibility and use our democratic rights and vote. We are doing injustice for the youth of 1976 if we are not exercising our rights. Youth nowadays spend too much time on things that destroy their lives like alcohol and drugs which have long term negative impact on their lives. Youth day reminds us that we are capable, we are the future, and we are leaders. We need to start taking charge of our respective futures. -Lebo

It symbolises unity amongst youth, a fighting spirit, and being able to stand for what is right and good for the future of the youth in the country regardless of the obstacles. Celebrating the lives of 1976 youth who fought against the Bantu education, we are reaping the fruits of their blood and sweat today. This day encourages us to be real and authentic to ourselves and what we believe in. We appreciate their effort and honour their lives-Thembuluwo

The day we commemorate the youngsters of 16 June 1976, who once united and decided to protest against oppression, injustice and education inequality that was enforced by apartheid policies. It’s a day of remembrance for us, those who sacrificed with their lives in order for us to acquire democracy that present today. Also being mindful of the equal opportunities and access to standard education that resultant from the Soweto 1976 uprising- Daniel
